FKM is the general name for the family of fluoroelastomers, commonly known by the trade name Viton. It is a high-performance elastomer favored in the most demanding industrial applications thanks to its superior resistance to high temperatures, aggressive chemicals, and fuels.
Key Properties of FKM
- Resistance to very high temperatures (up to +200°C in continuous use)
- Superior resistance to aggressive chemicals, acids, and hydrocarbons
- Low gas permeability
- Low compression set tendency even over long service life
Limitations and Cost
FKM loses flexibility at low temperatures earlier than many other rubbers, typically reaching its usable limit between -20°C and -15°C. Its production cost is also significantly higher than standard rubbers like NBR or EPDM, so it is generally chosen for applications where special requirements take priority.
Typical Applications
- Gaskets requiring high temperature and chemical resistance in the oil and gas sector
- Sealing elements compatible with next-generation fuel additives in automotive fuel systems
- O-rings and gaskets resistant to aggressive environments in the chemical industry
- High-performance sealing applications in aerospace and defense
Choosing the Right Application
Given its higher cost, FKM is typically used in critical applications involving high temperatures or exposure to aggressive chemicals where standard rubbers fall short. For applications where low-temperature flexibility is important, alternative formulations or materials should be considered.
